Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing to residents within the Liskeard area to assist in reducing speeding on local roadways. The force indicated that officers are actively seeking additional volunteers to participate in the community speedwatch initiative, which encompasses the region stretching from East Taphouse and Doublebois to St Ive, and from Pensilva to Widegates. According to officers, volunteers utilize speed detection equipment to monitor local routes, thereby emphasizing the hazards associated with excessive speed. Drivers exceeding the limit are subsequently reported to the police, and individuals who consistently disregard traffic laws may face prosecution. The police force stated that the primary objectives of this scheme are to educate motorists, preserve lives, and mitigate road-related injuries. Liskeard Police Community Support Officer Steve Edser, who collaborates with volunteers, remarked: “Residents tell us that speeding is still one of their biggest concerns and we know that this is certainly a major contributor to collisions on our roads.” He added that in St Ive, speeding was widespread until consistent speedwatch sessions prompted drivers to consider reducing their speed. “The latest session demonstrates that, while a handful of drivers were still intent on exceeding the limit, the vast majority were travelling at a safe speed.” Edser concluded by stating: “Our volunteers are doing an amazing job and just show how community-minded people can make a real difference in making our roads safer.” For updates, follow BBC Cornwall on X, Facebook, and Instagram.
