The 2024 NBA Cup final, scheduled for Las Vegas this week, will feature a matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Shai-Gilgeous Alexander are aiming to secure their inaugural NBA Cup titles. This marks the second iteration of the tournament, which employs a structure comparable to the football World Cup. Last year, the Los Angeles Lakers, led by LeBron James, claimed victory in the competition’s first edition, defeating the Indiana Pacers 123-109 in the championship game. The following details provide essential information regarding the 2024 NBA Cup final. Designed to enhance the significance of the season’s initial phase, the NBA Cup adopts a more condensed format than the league’s standard 82-game regular season. Evan Wasch, the NBA’s executive vice-president of basketball strategy and analytics, informed BBC Sport that “There was an opportunity to grow the league through additional competitions.” He further stated, “If you look around the world, there’s so many examples out there where there is more than one thing for teams to win.” Wasch concluded, “We felt that it was an untapped opportunity. Not necessarily a need for us, but just something that would really grow the game.” All 30 NBA teams were divided into six regionally organized groups, each comprising five teams. Following a single round-robin within each group, the leading team from each of the six pools progressed to the quarter-finals, joined by the top second-place team from both the Eastern and Western conferences. The quarter-final and semi-final rounds were contested regionally, with the premier team from each conference advancing to the final. Regarding the format, Wasch stated, “It’s basically a World Cup format with five teams in a group instead of four and eight teams advancing.” He added, “A lot of the elements look very similar to international football. There’s not a lot of difference with what has been done, except building it into our season. “It’s a pretty close one-to-one mapping.” Owing to its regional structure and the demanding NBA season calendar, the outcomes of NBA Cup games, with the exception of this week’s final, contribute to the regular season standings. The Bucks currently hold an overall season record of 14 victories and 11 defeats across 25 contests. In NBA Cup play, they boast an undefeated record of six wins from six games, indicating that their overall standing would be considerably lower without these cup results factored in. The Thunder lead the Western Conference standings, having secured 20 wins against five losses in their 25 matches. Their NBA Cup performance includes five wins from six games. The championship game is scheduled for 01:30 GMT on Wednesday morning, occurring merely three days after the semi-finals held on Sunday morning. The Bucks secured their spot in the final by defeating the Atlanta Hawks 110-102, whereas the Thunder advanced with a 111-96 victory over the Houston Rockets. Both semi-final contests took place consecutively within the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which will also host the final. Jalen Williams contributed 20 points during the Oklahoma City Thunder’s triumph against the Houston Rockets. For the Bucks, the standout player is Greek power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) has maintained a league-best average of 32.7 points per game throughout the current season. Additionally, Antetokounmpo holds the fifth position in the league for rebounds per game. Shai-Gilgeous Alexander has emerged as the top performer for the Thunder during the current season. The Canadian athlete, commonly referred to as ‘SGA’, received the Western Conference Player of the Month award for the combined months of January and February. He also ranks fourth across the league in average points per game. Twelve months prior, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were the ones to hoist the NBA Cup trophy. After the final concludes, an MVP for the NBA Cup will be announced, alongside a five-player team of the tournament. In 2023, both James and his LA Lakers teammate Anthony Davis were selected for the team of the tournament, with James additionally earning the MVP title. Antetokounmpo was included in last year’s team of the tournament and now has the opportunity to become the first player to be featured in two such teams.
