The city’s council in York has stated that an increase in funding is expected to assist in tackling homelessness and rough sleeping. The local authority is set to obtain approximately £1m from a £1bn government fund, which was unveiled this week by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner. This financial allocation is designated for front-line services aimed at assisting individuals experiencing homelessness and providing accommodation for those at risk. Councillor Michael Pavlovic, the City of York Council’s lead for housing, commented that the problem represents “one of the biggest challenges” confronting urban areas throughout the UK. He further noted that the population experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their residences is growing, and the council remains dedicated to providing affordable housing. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, York allocated over £750,000 for temporary accommodation during the fiscal year concluding in March. The new funding framework will enable councils to direct funds towards initiatives designed to transition individuals into permanent housing with support, rather than relying on temporary solutions like hostels. National data indicates that the utilization of emergency accommodation, frequently devoid of essential amenities like cooking facilities, has seen a twofold increase over the past three years.
