A union representing employees of a helicopter manufacturing company has reported that its members are experiencing “increasing anxiety” concerning a government contract that has been pending for an extended period. Unite has urged the UK government to resolve the prolonged uncertainty surrounding a £1 billion helicopter contract. Previously this year, it was verified that Leonardo, a company with a significant facility located in Yeovil, Somerset, was the only contender for a new helicopter agreement. The Ministry of Defence indicated that the contract’s award is expected in 2025. Unite stated that the contract is “crucial for the future of the factory in Yeovil,” which employs 2,800 individuals. Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, confirmed a recent meeting with Defence Secretary John Healey to obtain assurances. Ms Graham commented, “These are highly skilled workers and a further delay in awarding this contract would have disastrous consequences for the long-term future of this factory.” Ben Clarke, the union convenor at Leonardo Helicopters in Yeovil, stated: “This site isn’t just a workplace – it’s a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship. “We need the government to recognise that sustaining this legacy is vital for our national interests, both economically and strategically.” On November 26, Maria Eagle MP, the Minister for Defence Procurement, informed Parliament: “The New Medium Helicopter competition remains sensitive and the evaluation and approval process must complete before further details, including aircraft numbers, can be confirmed. The Ministry of Defence is continuing with the established procurement process, managed by Defence Equipment and Support, and the proposal will be evaluated through 2025 when, subject to government approvals, a contract award is anticipated.”
