A series of knife attacks in Manhattan on Monday resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left a third person in critical condition, according to police. Law enforcement officials in New York reported the apprehension of a 51-year-old suspect in connection with the “unprovoked” assaults, which occurred at three separate sites. The two male victims were transported to a local hospital, where their deaths were confirmed. The third victim, a woman, sustained stab wounds close to the United Nations headquarters and is currently in critical condition, authorities confirmed. New York City Mayor Eric Adams informed reporters that the assailant is a homeless man who had recently received a sentence in a criminal matter. During a news conference, Adams stated, “Three New Yorkers. Unprovoked attacks that left us searching for answers on how something like this could happen.” The mayor characterized the violence as “a clear, clear example” of shortcomings within the criminal justice system. He further noted that the suspect suffers from “severe mental health issues” requiring investigation and raised concerns regarding his presence on the streets. The reason behind the stabbings remains unknown. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny commented, “As of right now, these attacks seem to be unprovoked, that he just walked up to them and began to attack them with the knives.” The New York City Police Department has released images of two knives that were reportedly found at the locations of the assaults. Mr. Kenny provided details on the victims, stating that the initial fatality was a 26-year-old construction worker who was near his job site when assaulted. The second man to die was a 68-year-old individual who was fishing in the East River at the time of his attack. Approximately two hours later, a third stabbing incident took place, involving a 36-year-old woman who was repeatedly stabbed outside the UN headquarters, according to police. A taxi driver witnessed this assault and alerted law enforcement, which subsequently led to the suspect’s apprehension. Police have not publicly identified any of the three victims.
