An individual previously incarcerated for the killing of a policewoman has received an additional six-month term for unlawfully absconding from prison. Shane Frane, aged 37, is presently serving an indeterminate prison sentence following his conviction for the manslaughter of Constable Philippa Reynolds, which occurred in Londonderry in 2013. The police officer, who was on duty, died when a stolen vehicle operated by Frane collided with her car. Frane had previously confessed to being unlawfully at large from prison on January 17, having not returned to Maghaberry prison following a temporary day release. Following his escape, Frane was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement in the Republic of Ireland on February 1 and subsequently extradited to Northern Ireland. Frane, a native of Limerick in the Republic of Ireland, received his sentence at Craigavon Crown Court on Wednesday. It was specified that the six-month period would be served consecutively to his existing sentence. Subsequent to the sentencing, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a statement affirming their ongoing close collaboration with An Garda Síochána (Irish police) “to locate and arrest persons sought in either jurisdiction”. Detective Inspector Bell stated, “We appreciate the continued assistance of An Garda Síochána in tracking down those who abscond from the justice system here in Northern Ireland.” He added, “The Police Service of Northern Ireland will relentlessly pursue anyone trying to delay or deny justice to victims of crime.”
