Local authorities have reported that a minimum of 24 individuals perished when two vessels, primarily transporting Somali nationals, overturned near the coast of Madagascar. Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement indicating that measures were being taken to “ensure the safe return of the survivors”. The two boats had a combined total of 70 passengers. These vessels were found floating without power off Madagascar’s northern coast in the Indian Ocean on Saturday. It is thought that their engines had malfunctioned. According to a senior Somali government official who spoke to local media, fishermen carried out the rescue of the survivors. Survivors reported that their objective was to reach the French island of Mayotte, a frequently used yet hazardous passage for Somali migrants seeking asylum. The prevalence of unemployment and poverty in the Horn of Africa compels numerous young individuals to embark on this dangerous journey towards Europe, driven by aspirations for an improved life. Malagasy authorities issued a caution regarding “the severe risks associated with illegal migration,” implying that those affected by the incident were migrants.
