England forward Jonny Hill has been issued a 10-week suspension in connection with an incident involving a supporter, which occurred after Sale’s Premiership semi-final loss to Bath in June. A 28-year-old individual reported sustaining a cut above his eye as a result. Hill faced an independent disciplinary panel on Monday concerning a “breach of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game,” specifically an accusation that he “physically abused” a spectator. He admitted the charge brought against him. Both Sale, Hill’s club, and Avon and Somerset Police confirmed they were investigating the matter when it took place. The 30-year-old’s suspension has been applied retrospectively, with four weeks of the ban deferred until the next season. Sale announced that he will be available for selection starting 7 December. Philip Evans KC, who chairs the independent panel, stated: “The panel concluded the appropriate starting point was a 20-week suspension from playing.” He further added: “They also found the circumstances of this case to be exceptional and as a consequence, and because of the substantial mitigation available to Jonny Hill, that starting point was reduced to 10 weeks, four of which will be suspended until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.” The panel also mandated: “In addition he is required to give a presentation to young players at the club which is to be recorded and provided to the RFU [Rugby Football Union].” England international Hill has been out of play since January. He suffered a season-ending patella tendon injury during Sale’s Champions Cup defeat to La Rochelle and observed the club’s semi-final loss from the stands at the Recreation Ground. Sale currently holds the eighth position in the Premiership table, having secured victories in three of their six matches this season.
