Despite Arne Slot’s seemingly smooth start as Liverpool’s manager, a significant challenge concerns the role of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay international has registered only three goals in 19 appearances this season. Liverpool supporters, as previously noted on this page, observed him looking “out of sorts” during Tuesday’s match against Girona, where several scoring opportunities were missed. Following the match, Slot defended Nunez, stating: “I can agree he missed quite a few chances [but] I think every striker all around the world has periods where every ball goes in, and sometimes he has a period when you try so hard but you’re not able to score.” This scenario is not unprecedented for Nunez. Now in his third year at Anfield and, at 25 years old, presumably entering his prime, the player acquired from Benfica for an initial £64m is arguably expected to be a regular starter. Instead, he has been a peripheral figure, having started only half of Liverpool’s matches this season. This situation prompts a discussion: is Nunez’s performance regressing, or is his current position merely an unavoidable consequence of Liverpool’s historically strong start to the season? The 2023-24 season proved productive for Nunez. He recorded eighteen goals and 13 assists, an impressive output for a player whose performance had been inconsistent during his debut campaign. Initially labeled an “agent of chaos,” he appeared to have enhanced his attacking output, complementing his unpredictable style. His contributions were notably strong last winter, when he scored five goals across a sequence of six wins in seven Premier League matches starting from 26 December. Nevertheless, the decline in his regular starting position began during the final weeks of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, when he started only one of the last eight games. This pattern has persisted; however, a key question is whether his statistical performance has also declined. It might be premature to draw extensive conclusions. Nunez has, after all, taken only 30 shots in total this season, and his 10% conversion rate aligns with figures from previous years. What remains evident, however, is that he is not a guaranteed starter under Slot and will likely continue to elicit varied opinions among Liverpool supporters. A fully fit and in-form Nunez would undoubtedly provide a significant advantage to the Reds as they compete for silverware on four fronts. However, a similar impact is anticipated from Diogo Jota, who is expected to return directly to the team upon his recovery.
