Jersey’s team has secured victories in all four of its initial matches at the European Cricket Championship, held in Spain. The women’s team from the island, whose participation was postponed by one day due to travel disruptions caused by Storm Darragh, currently leads the Challenger division of the 10-overs-a-side competition, sharing the top spot with host nation Spain. Jersey commenced their campaign on Tuesday morning with a seven-wicket victory against Germany. They then went on to decisively defeat the Czech Republic, the bottom-ranked team, in their second fixture, a match where teenager Olivia Bastin secured a wicket on her debut for Jersey. Following their restriction of the Czech team to a mere 22 runs for six wickets across 10 overs, with captain Chloe Greechan claiming two wickets for only two runs, Jersey pursued their target, achieving a 10-wicket win in just 10 balls, propelled by Aimee Aikenhead’s unbeaten 16 runs from six deliveries. On Wednesday morning, the island squad encountered a more challenging contest, ultimately overcoming Austria by seven wickets. After batting first, the Austrian side was limited to 69 runs for three wickets within their 10 overs, with all three dismissals resulting from run-outs. In response, Trinity Smith contributed 21 runs, Aikenhead added 17, and Greechan scored 16, as Jersey successfully chased the target, reaching 71 runs for five wickets in 8.4 overs. Their fourth match presented their most formidable challenge, played against the host nation, Spain. Spain posted a total of 75 runs for three wickets from their 10 overs, largely due to an opening partnership of 60 runs between Alexis Hartley (30) and Naomi Hillman-Bermejo (36). Jersey’s opener, Analise Merritt, struck three sixes en route to scoring 26 runs from 10 balls. Subsequently, Flo Tanguy (nine not out) and Grace Wetherall (15 not out) steered Jersey to 76 runs for three wickets, securing the win with seven balls remaining. The island team is scheduled to compete against Austria and Germany on Thursday, followed by fixtures against Spain and the Czech Republic on Friday. The top four teams will then advance to the finals, set for Saturday.
