The construction of 12 new council apartments near Derby city centre is scheduled to commence in 2025. Derby City Council has given its approval for the development of this new residential complex, situated on Barlow Street, adjacent to London Road. The development will consist of two blocks, each containing six apartments. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), each of these residences will feature three bedrooms, classifying them as “family homes”. Construction work on the site may begin as early as March 2025, due to the planning permission’s expiration in April of that year. The location on Barlow Street reportedly offers “easy access” to nearby schools, the city centre, numerous retail outlets on London Road, and efficient transport connections. A report from the council stated: “Developing new council homes is set out as a priority in both the council plan 2022-25 and the council delivery plan 2024-25.“The purpose of developing new council homes is to provide secure, affordable and high-quality homes for people whose housing needs may not be met by the private market. “Some of the people on the housing register are among the most disadvantaged in the city and the proposed use of the land, targets support towards these people.” During a cabinet meeting held on 13 November, Labour councillor Ndukwe Onuoha commented: “I am glad we are doing this. The thought of having a place you can comfortably say is yours at the end of the day is heartwarming.“The thing with temporary accommodation is you never know what’s going to happen or what is around the corner. Sometimes you can be one financial decision away from being homeless. This will help families and children settle down.” Following the completion of construction, the site is expected to be handed over to Derby Homes – the organization tasked with managing the residences for the city council – approximately in the summer of 2026, as per the project’s projected outline schedule.
