As the Champions League’s new format progresses, questions arise concerning Manchester City’s potential exclusion from a top-eight position. Additionally, the requirements for Celtic, Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Liverpool to advance to the knockout stages are under scrutiny. With three matches left in the restructured Champions League’s 36-team league phase, the top eight teams will automatically qualify for the last 16, thereby bypassing the two-legged knockout play-off round. The new format has presented challenges for some teams, with English champions Manchester City currently placed 17th after five games. Furthermore, defending champions Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain are at risk of failing to reach the knockout stages altogether. To clarify the objectives for the 36 League Phase teams: the top eight finishers secure automatic progression to the last 16 and will be seeded. These seeded teams will then face the victors of eight two-legged knockout play-off ties, contested by clubs ranked from ninth to 24th. Teams finishing between ninth and 16th will be seeded for the play-offs, competing against teams ranked 17th to 24th, and will have the home advantage for the second leg. Clubs positioned 25th or lower will be eliminated from the competition and will not secure entry into the Europa League. As this is the inaugural season of the revised format, the precise number of points needed to secure a top-eight position or to avoid elimination from the competition is yet to be definitively established. Prior to the start of this season’s competition, Opta conducted 50,000 simulations of the league phase to project each team’s points totals and their probability of advancing. Their analysis indicated that accumulating 16 points—potentially achieved through five wins and one draw from eight matches—would provide a 98% likelihood of securing a top-eight finish. Furthermore, reaching 10 points—for instance, three wins and one draw—was projected to offer a 99% chance of securing a spot within the top 24. Conversely, any team accumulating fewer than nine points could anticipate their participation in European competition this season concluding. Liverpool, currently leading the standings, is the sole team with a perfect record after five matches. With 15 points, they are guaranteed at least a play-off position. It is also likely they have sufficient points to reach the last 16, as Opta’s pre-tournament simulations suggested that 15 points secured a top-eight place 73 percent of the time. Inter Milan, one of two other unbeaten teams along with Atalanta, trails Liverpool by two points. Italian champions Inter are well-positioned for the knockout stages, as are Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Atalanta, all of whom are currently within the top eight. Arsenal holds the seventh position following a decisive 5-1 victory against Sporting away. With 10 points, the Gunners are highly likely to have secured at least a play-off spot. Mikel Arteta’s team is situated between Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco, who round out the top eight. Aston Villa is in ninth place with 10 points, trailing Arsenal, Leverkusen, and Monaco solely due to goal difference. Unai Emery’s squad began their campaign with three victories but subsequently experienced a loss to Club Brugge and a draw against Juventus. Manchester City has secured two wins from their five matches in this season’s Champions League. Several European heavyweights are currently positioned outside the top eight, including Bayern Munich in 13th, Atletico Madrid in 15th, AC Milan in 16th, and Juventus in 19th. The most unexpected team struggling to keep pace is the 2022-23 Champions League winners, Manchester City. Despite Opta assigning Pep Guardiola’s team a 24.9 percent chance of winning this season’s Champions League in September, City is currently in 17th place with just eight points from five games. Based on Opta’s pre-tournament simulations, teams with eight points at this juncture avoided elimination 16% of the time. With nine points, they advanced to the next round 69% of the time, and with 10 points, they progressed in 99% of simulations. Scottish champions Celtic also have eight points and are aiming to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Real Madrid, who have won the competition 15 times, currently hold the last qualification position in 24th place. “Los Blancos” have only six points, having suffered three losses in their five matches. Paris St-Germain represents the most prominent club currently in the elimination zone, trailing Madrid by two points, having secured only one victory in their Champions League matches this season.
