A conservation organization in south-east Sheffield has secured over £100,000 from the National Lottery to enhance accessibility within a local woodland area. Specifically, the Owlthorpe Fields Conservation Group intends to improve access for individuals with disabilities, renovate existing pathways, control plant growth, and mend historical stone walls. Local residents will be invited to participate in conservation efforts, offering volunteers an opportunity to acquire new expertise. Claire Baker, the group’s chair, expressed that they were “immensely grateful,” stating further: “This grant will allow us to continue to develop Owlthorpe Fields for the well-being of our community and the preservation of its wildlife.” Helen Featherstone, the England North director for the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which sanctioned the £101,990 grant, commented: “We are delighted to support the Owlthorpe Fields Conservation Group to protect this important green space.. “Thanks to National Lottery players, the project will improve site access, create an improved area for wildlife and revive heritage skills with the local community.” Clive Betts, the Member of Parliament for Sheffield South East, also endorsed the initiative, remarking: “I am delighted that the Owlthorpe Fields Conservation Group have received this National Lottery Grant.”The group have done wonderful work in preserving the fields and I have been pleased to work with them on their endeavours.”I look forward to sharing the ‘fruits’ of their activities in the future.”
