Full-back George Furbank’s participation in the upcoming Six Nations tournament for England is uncertain following a fractured arm sustained during Northampton’s Investec Champions Cup victory against Bulls on Saturday. The 28-year-old player exited the match after 29 minutes of Saints’ 30-21 win, following a tackle by Bulls captain Elrigh Louw. As of Tuesday, Furbank was undergoing medical assessment, with a potential need for surgery. Northampton head coach Sam Vesty stated, “He has fractured his arm, it can vary so nothing concrete on how long that will take.” Vesty added, “We are not 100% sure what the outcome of that medical assessment will be.” Establishing a precise timeline for Furbank’s comeback is challenging because recovery periods vary depending on the specific type of fracture and individual patient factors. Given that England’s Six Nations opening match against defending champions Ireland on 1 February is just six and a half weeks away, it is probable that a crucial member of England’s back division will miss the initial round. Furbank had been a starter in three of England’s four autumn internationals, having taken over from Freddie Steward midway through the 2024 Six Nations. Furbank registered his third try across 14 England appearances against Japan during the autumn internationals. For the 29-20 loss to South Africa in November, Borthwick favored Steward’s proficiency under the high ball, making the Leicester player the most probable choice to replace Furbank again at Test level. Northampton Saints will significantly feel Furbank’s absence, particularly as they aim for the victory in Pretoria to revitalize their performance amidst a struggling Premiership title defense. The team currently holds eighth position, having secured three wins from seven matches, ahead of their away fixture against Saracens on Sunday. Vesty further commented on Furbank, stating, “It is a big loss, he is a fantastic rugby player.” “He is our club captain and has really grown into that leadership role over the last couple of years. He will be a loss,” Vesty continued. “His counter-attacking ability, his ability to make other people look very good, his calmness are all real strong traits of George’s and have got him a long way.”
