The Masjid Khadijah and Islamic Centre, located on Cromwell Road in Peterborough, hosted its yearly open day on Sunday. Organisers reported that the event, which welcomed various community groups, was “well supported” and that the mosque expressed being “honoured” to open its doors. Those present at the event were given the opportunity to observe congregational prayers, experience the atmosphere within an active mosque, and pose questions regarding Islam and its customs. Nafis Lodhi, a member of the mosque committee, stated that there is an intention to arrange additional outreach events aimed at fostering “constructive dialogue” and engagement with the local populace. Among the attendees at Sunday’s event were local city councillors, Peterborough’s Labour MP Andrew Pakes, and Mayor Marco Cereste. Mr. Pakes indicated his presence at the event was to gain insight into the mosque’s community initiatives. He commented, “Our faith communities are the lifeforce of so many great things in Peterborough.” Mr. Pakes further added, “The Khadijah Mosque through their charitable venture, Icare, provides invaluable support through their food bank, youth work and activities.” Established in 1986 within a modest house, the mosque on Cromwell Road has undergone continuous expansion. It operates as an affiliate of the UK Islamic Mission. Before the event, Faisal Mahmood, also from the committee, stated: “We aim to act as a place of worship for the Muslims in Peterborough, developing the community through our mosque, education, charitable, sports and social activities, and taking a lead in improving individuals and society in all its dimensions.” He also added, “The event is primarily aimed at improving community cohesion and for us all to get to know one another better within the community.”
