An educator has been prohibited from teaching after transmitting a self-portrait that was both nude and sexually explicit to several young women. Nemiya Rookwood, aged 33, was employed at Lincoln University Technical College at the time of the occurrence in 2018. During a hearing conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency, Mr. Rookwood refuted 13 accusations and contended that he was not culpable of unacceptable professional conduct. Nevertheless, the panel determined that his actions had discredited the teaching profession and stated that his behavior “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession”. Mr. Rookwood was confronted with 13 allegations, with 12 of these being deemed unproven. The panel, however, substantiated one allegation: that he had transmitted unsolicited and private nude images of himself to a group of young women with whom he had interacted in a professional setting. None of the recipients were students, and all were adults. A spokesperson for Lincoln UTC stated: “Once the school was made aware of the allegations against Mr Rookwood, we launched an immediate review which led to his prompt termination.” The panel concluded that Mr. Rookwood had not adhered to appropriate boundaries and had not demonstrated proper and professional consideration for the school’s ethos, policies, and practices. In reaching its decision, the panel acknowledged his admission to a witness at the time that he had transmitted a sexually explicit image. Nevertheless, it was observed that he offered “any explanation for his misconduct” and did not “demonstrate any remorse”. The panel further commented: “Mr Rookwood was in his first years of teaching at the time of the misconduct, and the panel was concerned by his lack of insight, signifying a risk of repetition in the future”. The Secretary of State approved the implementation of a prohibition order, preventing Mr. Rookwood from teaching for a period of eight years. He is ineligible to apply for this order to be rescinded before December 2032.
