Two individuals have received prison sentences following an incident where a man was pulled along a road for half a mile while attempting to prevent a robber’s escape in a getaway vehicle. The bystander intervened after Keith Wilcox seized a woman’s handbag in the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Castleford, subsequently departing in a Vauxhall Corsa operated by Lisa Burgess. On 1 September, the man mounted the vehicle’s bonnet in an effort to halt its movement, subsequently falling and sustaining several fractured ribs. Burgess, aged 44, and Wilcox, aged 41, both residing at Church Lane, Outwood, Wakefield, received their sentences at Leeds Crown Court. Authorities reported that subsequent to the robbery, Burgess made an attempt to utilize a bank card, which had been contained within the stolen bag, at a retail establishment in Altofts. Burgess, having previously admitted guilt to charges of robbery, fraud, and causing injury by dangerous driving, was incarcerated for three years and prohibited from driving for a period of 42 months. Wilcox entered a guilty plea to robbery and was sentenced to 20 months in prison. PC Natalie Carr stated that the victim demonstrated “immense bravery standing up against something that he knew to be wrong”. She further commented: “We all have a part to play in challenging violence against women and girls and I know how thankful the female robbery victim is for his actions.”
