As part of an initiative to establish a greenway for pedestrians and cyclists, a bridge has been positioned along the path of a disused railway. Volunteers anticipate that the initial segment of the Alnwick to Cornhill line, located in Northumberland, will become accessible to the public by early 2025. The railway, originally established in 1887, ceased operations in 1953 after proving neither profitable nor extensively utilized. Stewart Oades, who chairs Borderline Greenway, commented on the development, stating: “Getting the bridge in place is a small part of a very ambitious project, but it’s still fantastic to see it happen.” The comprehensive vision for the project involves transforming the entire Alnwick to Cornhill line into a pathway accommodating walkers, cyclists, equestrians, pushchairs, and wheelchairs. This route is also planned to link with Route 1 of the National Cycle Network, thereby forming a 100-mile (170km) circular path across north Northumberland, intended to encourage cyclists to discover more of the region beyond its coastal areas. The specific bridge, located at Greenfield, close to Alnwick, had been dismantled following the railway’s closure. Its replacement, costing over £13,000, was deemed crucial for the opening of the initial section. Mr. Oades noted the public’s strong interest, stating that people were “really enthusiastic about us connecting the two sides of the old track.” He added that “People will be able to travel as far as Rugley Bridge and then return along Rugley Road, creating a nice 5km (2.6 mile) circular route.” To date, the project has received financial support through public donations and various grants. The organization aims to progressively extend the route, provided they secure agreements from landowners and acquire additional funding. Mr. Oades expressed his aspiration, remarking: “Seeing the whole line in use would be something long-lasting for future generations,” and “a great testament to the beauty of Northumberland.” Martin Swinbank, the Green Party county councillor representing Alnwick, also shared his positive reaction, stating: “It’s absolutely wonderful to see.” He further commented on the strong local backing, adding: “We’ve had the most fantastic support from the local community and I know once we get the route properly open in the New Year, they’ll be lots of people using it.”
