World number one Judd Trump experienced his first failure to reach a tournament quarter-final in 2024, following a last-16 defeat by China’s Xu Si at the International Championship. The Englishman’s streak of 15 consecutive occasions reaching at least the last eight concluded with a 6-4 loss in Nanjing. Xu, the world number 49, quickly established a 2-0 advantage with breaks of 76. Trump, 35, then responded by winning three consecutive frames to take the lead. Although Trump preserved his lead after both players made breaks of 65, Xu ultimately clinched the victory with breaks of 104, 69, and 68. The 26-year-old Xu, who achieved a maximum 147 break against Ryan Day in the preceding round, is scheduled to face either Mark Selby or Gary Wilson in his next match. In other matches, Welsh player Jackson Page advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating China’s Pang Junxu 6-4. Pang Junxu had previously eliminated seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan. Chris Wakelin also secured his place in the next round with a 6-4 victory against Mark Williams. Additionally, Scotland’s John Higgins, a four-time world champion, overcame a challenging match, recovering from deficits of 3-1 and 5-4 to narrowly defeat China’s Lyu Haotian 6-5.
