Jake Richards, who has participated in 17 first-team matches for Exeter City, expresses his ambition to become the next academy graduate from the club to achieve significant success in football. The 17-year-old midfielder has started to integrate into City’s senior squad, having appeared 17 times across all competitions since his initial appearance in August 2023, when he was 16. Richards identifies England forward Ollie Watkins, Wales defender Ethan Ampadu, and England Under-21 attacker Jay Stansfield—all of whom began their careers at Exeter—as major sources of inspiration. “The club’s got a big reputation for producing great academy players,” Richards informed BBC Sport. “It puts a bit of not added pressure, but you want to go and be the next person to do something. It certainly gives you more hunger, but also to look at them and see where they’ve gone, it gives you belief where you can get to.” Richards has performed commendably in the team’s red and white colours, notably scoring his inaugural goal in September during a Vertu Trophy victory against Tottenham’s under-21 squad. He attributes his progress to collaborating with City manager Gary Caldwell. “It’s great for him to come out and say good things about me, but I just listen to what he says in training,” Richards stated. “His advice to me, what to do, it’s a big help – he helps me off the ball, helps me on the ball, helps me mentally. He’s looked after me quite well, so I’m just grateful for that.” Richards is among several Exeter academy players striving to secure a place in the first-team roster. He is scheduled to participate in Exeter’s Vertu Trophy fixture against Birmingham City on Tuesday, a competition in which he has already made six appearances. He believes this competition offers a valuable opportunity to gain additional first-team experience as he seeks chances to impress the Grecians’ leadership. “I think it’s a great competition, especially for younger players to start to get games in,” Richards added. “It’s still a big competition, there’s good teams such as the under-21 academies and other first teams. I think it gives you that taste of what’s to come and the experience to prove yourself to the manager and the other players.” Despite his high regard, Richards has not yet finalized his initial professional contract with Exeter. Following Richards’ first goal, Caldwell indicated his eagerness to sign the player, stating he foresaw a “big future for him” at the club. “I just want to play as much football as I can at whatever level that is,” Richards commented when questioned about signing the professional deal. “If that’s the first team here then obviously doing as well as I can in the games, having the biggest impact possible and see where that takes me in the future. I just try and focus on my football – the manager and I have a good relationship, we work well together.” Post navigation Michael Appleton’s Comments on Morgan Rogers’ Enjoyment of Physical Play Why Test Bowling Differs from County Cricket
