An advocacy organization is requesting specific information regarding the commencement date for an upcoming railway service. Northern Trains, the operating company, has informed travelers that the new Northumberland Line, connecting Newcastle and Ashington, is scheduled to commence operations in December, though without a precise date. Northumberland County Council, responsible for overseeing the project, states that a “phased opening” in December remains planned, but a specific date has not been disclosed. The South East Northumberland Rail User Group (Senrug) highlights that having knowledge of the service’s start date would enable individuals to finalize their Christmas travel arrangements. This new railway path will reintroduce passenger rail services to the county’s south east region, a first since the 1960s, linking Bedlington, Ashington, and Blyth with Newcastle. Three of the six stations along the line—Seaton Delaval, Ashington, and Newsham—were initially slated for a summer opening but experienced a delay. The remaining stations are expected to open in 2025. While train services have been listed on the National Rail website starting December 15, purchasing tickets for these services is not yet possible. Dennis Fancett, Chair of Senrug, has called for increased transparency regarding the precise commencement of services and which stations will become operational. “I can understand the Programme Board not wanting to set false hope by announcing a date and then having to change it,” he said. “But many people are saying to me we should by now have a clear plan that can be published. “People want to make plans like can I go by train to do my Christmas shopping in Newcastle or MetroCentre, or if granny is coming to stay for Christmas.” “They want to know if they can get to Ashington by train.” A representative for the Northumberland Line commented: “We are looking forward to bringing passenger trains back to communities in south east Northumberland for the first time in 60 years.” “As soon as the entry into service date is confirmed it will be communicated, as well as details around buying tickets.” Post navigation Westbound A38 Lane in Bristol to Reopen Before Christmas Woman Rescued After Losing Boots in Peak District Peat Bog
