West Northamptonshire Council stated it sought to secure an alternative Christmas market for its £12 million redeveloped square, following the initial operator’s declaration of being “unable to proceed.” Previously, West Northamptonshire Council had communicated that a festive market would not take place, citing the necessity for “extensive planning.” The authority has since disclosed that a market had been arranged during the summer, but the operator “pulled out” in October, a development initially reported by the Northampton Chronicle and Echo. Daniel Lister, the cabinet member responsible for local economy, culture, and leisure, explained that the council endeavored to secure a different operator, but none met the required standards. “Some of the offerings weren’t great, as you would expect. It’s quite late notice at that point,” he stated. He added, “Whilst we worked hard to secure a Christmas market for this year, unforeseen circumstances on the operator’s side meant they were unable to proceed.” In lieu of a market, the authority has unveiled “Christmas on the Market Square,” an array of festive activities scheduled to occur over three weekends throughout December. Mr. Lister commented that these activities are intended to generate visitor traffic and provide support for local market traders. “We’ve got an elf takeover and a ‘grinchy’ surprise on 7 December,” he mentioned. He further detailed, “We are going to have a snow globe where people can go in and take pictures; we’re going to have an outdoor cinema that people can go enjoy films for free.” “And then on 21 December, we’ve got carols and Christmas music, so there’s lots going on across those three weekends,” he concluded regarding the events. Mr. Lister confirmed that preparations for the Christmas market in the upcoming year are slated to commence in January.
