A 33-year-old individual has received a prison sentence of four years and four months for intentionally driving his vehicle into a group of pedestrians. Rhys Evan Mercer, residing at Doris Road in Kettering, employed his white Land Rover Defender as a weapon during the early hours of April 16, 2023. He targeted seven individuals on Bath Road in the Northamptonshire town, an act that occurred after a prior dispute. A man in his 40s sustained serious injuries, which encompassed multiple rib fractures, brain hematomas, lung damage, and the permanent loss of his sense of smell. Four additional individuals incurred injuries that varied from fractures to cuts and bruises. Following the event, Mercer contacted 999 to report what he had done. Subsequently, he was arrested and admitted guilt to grievous bodily harm at Northampton Crown Court. Detective Constable Amie Watson, who is part of Northamptonshire Police and was in charge of the investigation, stated: “This was a terrifying experience for the victims of this attack.” She added: “I hope the sentencing of Rhys Mercer provides them with some closure and an ability to move forward and continue with both their physical and mental recoveries.” Watson also expressed: “I hope Rhys Mercer spends his time in prison reflecting on his actions and chooses to make wiser decisions when he is released.” The previous month, Mercer received a sentence of four years and four months in prison.
