The subsequent phase of a road bridge construction project in Surrey has been deferred. Guildford Borough Council (GBC) announced that work on the Ash Road Bridge project is now anticipated to commence in December, with the bridge expected to “open in the new year”. This upcoming phase involves establishing a temporary diversion route for cars and light vehicles, which will remain in effect until the bridge becomes operational. The council stated that the precise opening date would be confirmed as soon as possible. The structure has been named the Chester Bridge, a decision made after the council permitted public participation in selecting its designation. This name references the Chester Arms pub, formerly situated close to the station, which itself was named after the Chester family residing in the vicinity of Poyle Park. The bridge is intended to eliminate the necessity for vehicles to utilize a level crossing in Ash, which, as the council previously indicated, experiences closures “up to 25 minutes per hour”. However, pedestrians and cyclists will retain the ability to traverse the railway at the existing level crossing.
