Bluey, the canine protagonist of the Bafta-winning children’s television series, is set to appear on the big screen in her inaugural feature film. Its theatrical release is slated for 2027, after which it will be available for streaming on Disney+, ABC iView, and ABC Kids in Australia. BBC Studios, the commercial division of the BBC, is collaborating with Disney on this project. Bluey, a blue heeler dog, lives with her mother, father, and younger sister, Bingo, and is known for transforming everyday occurrences into adventures. Joe Brumm, the creator of the show, commented: “I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.” The TV series was jointly commissioned by ABC and BBC Studios in 2017 and is produced by the Australian company Ludo (a blue heeler is an Australian dog breed). It is accessible in over 140 countries and holds the position of the leading program on CBeebies and Disney+ in the UK. According to Nielsen Media Research, it is also the most-watched series globally on Disney+ for the current year. The series has also received numerous accolades, including Television Critics Association Awards in 2023 and 2024, and this year’s Peabody Award. Over the past year, the series has been streamed for more than 20 billion minutes on Disney+ in the US, placing it among the country’s top 10 streaming programs by minutes viewed. The film will feature the voice actors from the television show, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, who portray Bluey’s parents, Chilli and Bandit Heeler. The music will be composed by Joff Bush.
