Hannah Kobayashi, a woman from Hawaii who was reported missing in Los Angeles before being located in Mexico, has stated she was “unaware” of the significant media attention surrounding her absence. In a communication delivered via a letter through her aunt, Ms. Kobayashi confirmed her return to the United States from Mexico on Sunday. Her vanishing had prompted a widespread national search. The 30-year-old photographer traveled from Maui to Los Angeles at the beginning of last month. She was scheduled to board a connecting flight to New York on 8 November. Law enforcement officials subsequently discovered she had instead entered Mexico on 12 November. During the search efforts, her father journeyed to Los Angeles and was discovered deceased, a death authorities ruled as a suicide. “I was unaware of everything that was happening in the media while I was away, and I am still processing it all,” Ms. Kobayashi conveyed in a statement to NBC News. She added, “My focus now is on my healing, my peace and my creativity.” A statement released by Ms. Kobayashi’s family last week did not disclose the location or circumstances of her discovery. Her disappearance had generated various conspiracy theories, particularly after she arrived in Los Angeles from Maui but failed to board her scheduled connecting flight to New York, where she intended to visit her aunt. Security camera recordings depicted her exiting the airport and appearing at several sites across Los Angeles alongside an unidentified male, who was subsequently interviewed by law enforcement. Following her arrival in Los Angeles, Ms. Kobayashi’s family members reported receiving atypical text messages from her mobile device before all contact stopped. On 11 November, her mother inquired via text if she had reached New York, to which Ms. Kobayashi responded “no.” She also communicated with friends, conveying apprehension for her personal safety and worries that an individual was trying to steal her identity. Her relatives had voiced apprehension that she might have been a victim of human trafficking; however, police investigations concluded there was no indication of criminal activity. After several days of searching, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that surveillance footage indicated she had crossed the border into Mexico on her own, leading them to discontinue the search operation. Law enforcement designated her as a “voluntary missing person.” On 24 November, subsequent to family members convening in Los Angeles, her father, Ryan, aged 58, was discovered deceased in the vicinity of Los Angeles International Airport. The medical examiner identified the cause of death as suicide. Ms. Kobayashi’s statement did not directly refer to this event, according to an NBC report on Monday.
