An individual has received a prison sentence for trying to abduct a four-year-old boy within a public car park. Andrzej Palosz, aged 48, stated his motive was to observe the reaction of the child’s mother to her son being removed by a “random stranger,” a concept he developed after viewing child-snatcher videos on YouTube. Mr. Palosz admitted guilt to the attempted abduction, which took place in Bathgate, West Lothian, on 7 May. He received a sentence of 40 months in prison and is scheduled for 12 months of supervision by social workers following his release. Palosz, a Polish national who relocated to Scotland in 2016, faces deportation to Poland upon the completion of his sentence. Testimony presented in court indicated that the boy’s mother was picking up her two children from Bathgate Early Years Centre around midday when she observed Palosz engaging with her son and guiding him away by the hand. She retrieved her son from Palosz’s hold and proceeded to secure both of her children in their car seats. Subsequently, Palosz tried to extract the boy from the vehicle, but his mother succeeded in closing the door. As she attempted to enter her car, the accused obstructed her way and yelled “open the door”. An eyewitness observing the incident intervened, diverting Palosz’s attention sufficiently for the woman to enter her vehicle and depart, contacting law enforcement as she drove off. Police officers characterized the woman as “extremely shaken and frightened” due to the ordeal. Authorities located Palosz seated on the car park steps, appearing to be intoxicated. Lesley Cunningham, representing the defense, informed Livingston Sheriff Court that Palosz had viewed “staged abduction” videos on YouTube, depicting individuals attempting to take a child from an unsuspecting member of the public to gauge their reactions. The defense lawyer stated: “He tells me this was not an incident that was in any way premeditated.” She continued, “He tells me it was almost an opportunistic event in that he spotted the family and this idea came to him.” Ms. Cunningham noted that prior to his arrest, the accused was homeless, had been sleeping at his workplace, and had been consuming a significant amount of alcohol. The attempted abduction was recorded on the mother’s phone; she stated she initiated recording due to concerns for her safety. Ms. Cunningham characterized Palosz’s conduct in the video as “completely shambolic” and “entirely under the influence of alcohol”. She further mentioned that Palosz desired to apologize to the family and acknowledged the trauma he had inflicted. Sheriff Susan Craig labeled the event “horrific” and confirmed she had reviewed the victim impact statement, where the boy’s mother detailed her current fear of leaving her home. The Sheriff stated she had contemplated referring the case to the High Court for a more severe sentence, given the gravity of the offense.
