Royal Mail anticipates its busiest day of the year on Wednesday, with approximately 35 million postal items scheduled for delivery throughout the UK. With Christmas Day just over a week away, BBC South East reporter Phil Harrison visited the Medway Mail Centre in Rochester, Kent, on Monday to observe the concluding preparations. As Wednesday marks the final day for second class and second class signed for deliveries, and Friday for first class and Royal Mail Tracked 48, the centre is experiencing significant activity. Jay Brooks, the regional operations director for Royal Mail in the South East, commented that they were “well set up” for what is expected to be the year’s busiest week. He further stated, “We’ve brought in 15,000 additional workers across the country to support us with the high volumes. Tomorrow [Tuesday] alone will be our busiest day of the year, we will see 35 million letters and nine million parcels pass through our network.” Tom Bailey, the plant manager at the Medway Mail Centre, detailed the extensive scale of the operation. He explained, “We currently are processing between 2.1 and 2.2 million items every day at Medway…I will be processing 350,000 parcels/Christmas presents a day.” Bailey indicated that the driving force behind this effort is to “deliver a fantastic Christmas” for individuals throughout Kent and other regions. While Calum Chatfield, the centre’s shift manager, expressed enjoyment of the demanding period, he acknowledged the significant strain involved. He stated, “We’re reacting well to the busy time at the moment but my team and I will certainly be looking forward to relaxing come Boxing Day.” Royal Mail confirms that deliveries are suspended on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.
