A collective of knitters has once again taken up their needles to adorn their village with festive cheer. The Haughton Ladies Who Knit group meticulously crafted characters from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, bringing vibrant decoration to 52 parking bollards and a postbox in Haughton-le-Skerne, a location near Darlington. Last year, group member Carol Clayton was responsible for a “12 Days of Christmas” display, among other festive woolly figurines created by the collective. Mrs Clayton noted that this year’s characters have received an “amazing response,” adding that it had been a “hard year for some” and the group’s sole aim was “to make people happy.” The elaborate display, spanning Haughton Green and extending along Stockton Road, features every character from the classic book, including Tiny Tim, the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Bob Cratchit. Additionally, other Christmas figurines also embellish various parking bollards. Mrs Clayton revealed that the group commenced knitting these figurines in October. “I would do my knitting in the evenings and would sometimes stay up until just after midnight… but it’s so worth it.” She further stated, “It was a group effort and we all created at least two characters.” The group collectively expressed: “It has made us all so happy doing them.” The knitters initially formed their group in 2022. Since then, they have produced distinct scenes for significant events such as the Coronation of King Charles III, as well as Remembrance displays and one commemorating the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The group articulated that their core mission is “all about community spirit” and “bringing some cheer” to the village. They added: “We’ve had people come here from different towns purely to see the display… and school groups come along too.” For further updates, BBC Tees can be followed on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
