A young Northern Ireland team, led by captain Simone Magill, faced a formidable Norway squad. Within 26 minutes, Norway had established a dominant lead of three goals at Inver Park, suggesting a difficult match ahead for Northern Ireland. As strong favourites for the Euro 2025 play-off, Norway began the game impressively, with Caroline Graham Hansen demonstrating the skills that define her as a world-class player. Northern Ireland stabilized their performance following Chloe McCarron’s entry at half-time, and even after allowing a straightforward fourth goal from a corner, the home side pushed for a late goal to boost their spirits. The 4-0 defeat largely concludes Northern Ireland’s aspirations of securing qualification for consecutive European Championships, a result that was largely anticipated before the fixture. Given Norway’s victories in the previous six encounters between the two teams, few observers expected Northern Ireland to achieve a major upset. Manager Tanya Oxtoby viewed this play-off as an opportunity for development as much as a contest against one of the globe’s elite teams. Since the Australian assumed management, the squad has undergone a significant transformation, occurring more rapidly than some predicted. Captain Simone Magill stated that this young Northern Ireland team, having faced Norway – their toughest opponent yet – can be “proud” of their performance, especially after falling three goals behind. The Birmingham City striker commented, “We knew coming into this game it was going to be a mammoth task,” adding, “They’ve got some of the best players in the world and I think we gave a really good account of ourselves.” She further explained, “Some people look at that scoreline and think otherwise, but for anyone who watched the game, we have a young squad and in the second half, I thought we applied ourselves really well.” Following previous matches against higher-ranked teams like Portugal and the Republic of Ireland during Oxtoby’s time in charge, Norway represented an even greater challenge for a team currently undergoing a transitional phase. In addition to Graham Hansen, whose first-half display at Inver Park was captivating, manager Gemma Grainger could also call upon talents such as Ada Hegerberg, Guro Reiten, and Frida Maanum. Magill suggested that Northern Ireland would benefit significantly from the experience of competing against a team with such an abundance of talent. She continued, “We’ve spoken about how we wanted to test ourselves against one of the best sides and Norway definitely are one of the top sides.” Magill further elaborated, “It gives that exposure to the kids and a lot of our girls were saying that they’ve never played a team like that before, and it’s the best team they’ve ever played.” She concluded, “I guess it shows the level and we want to get closer and closer to teams like that. “If we want to be qualifying for major tournaments then that’s the level of opposition we’re going to be playing.” A video highlighted Graham Hansen’s two goals contributing to Norway’s victory over Northern Ireland. Magill stated that her team must “pick ourselves up” in preparation for the return leg scheduled for Tuesday in Oslo. The improved performance in the second half will undoubtedly be beneficial in this regard. Although Norway eased their intensity in the final moments, having secured the win, Northern Ireland appeared genuinely dangerous as injury time drew near. While McCarron provided defensive stability, the inclusion of teenager Keri Halliday injected an attacking impetus, enabling the underdog team to press forward in the latter part of the match. Magill remarked, “I think this is the next step for us, when we actually have the ball against top sides that we need to relax a little bit more.” She continued, “We need to trust that we have the capabilities of doing something with it and not panicking.” Magill acknowledged, “Yes, it largely was an out of possession game for us but there were moments where we were trying to create little bits and pieces.” She concluded, “We’ll go back, review the game and try and approach Tuesday’s game with a very fresh mindset.”
