An individual sustained severe facial injuries after attempting to prevent armed robbers from taking a cash machine. The group of perpetrators was armed with crowbars and observed endeavoring to extract the ATM from the Co-operative store located in Richmond shortly after midnight on Saturday. According to North Yorkshire Police, the individual was assaulted following an intervention by members of the public “enjoying an evening out” who confronted the men. The alleged offenders departed without the ATM; however, two men were subsequently apprehended in relation to the event. A single suspect was apprehended when law enforcement personnel from Durham Constabulary intercepted his vehicle in the vicinity of Murton. North Yorkshire Police stated that the individuals, described as being in their 40s and originating from the County Durham area, have since been granted bail. Inspector Mark Gee, from the Richmond Neighbourhood Policing Team, commented: “My thanks go to the members of the public who stepped in and challenged the group. They have no doubt prevented them from getting away with the machine and the cash inside.” Highlights from West Yorkshire are accessible on BBC Sounds, the most recent episode of Look North is available, and submissions for potential stories are welcomed here.
