An organiser has stated that a football club’s Christmas initiative has received an overwhelming number of requests for assistance from families facing financial difficulties. Over the past five years, the AFC Telford United Foundation has organized a collection of gifts and food parcels, intended for parents unable to purchase presents for their children. Ian Preece, the Director, described the appeal as a “very big part” of the foundation’s annual activities, noting it is backed by a “lovely cohort” of volunteers. Speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire, he stated: “This is the fifth year we’ve been running it and we have been inundated already with people asking for help.” He further noted: “This year people have been asking weeks and weeks in advance.” Mr. Preece mentioned that the foundation plans to operate a toy bank, a food bank, and a delivery service. The initiative accepts donations of second-hand toys, provided they are in good condition, in addition to selection boxes and non-perishable food products. Mr. Preece expressed that it was “heartwarming” to witness the expressions of individuals collecting gifts. He commented: “I couldn’t imagine being a kid and not getting a gift. It must be hard being the mum and dad if they’ve got no money and they have either got to heat the house or eat.” He concluded: “It’s one of those choices and sometimes they can’t afford too much… if we can make a difference to those children and make them feel happy, it’s all worthwhile.” He further stated: “We all have those times in our lives where we need a little bit of help.” Contributions can be delivered to the AFC Telford Foundation Hub daily from Monday until Christmas Eve.
