Shropshire Council’s Conservative party is poised to lose its majority following the departure of two councillors. According to BBC information, Steve Davenport, who serves as councillor for St Martin’s near Oswestry and previously held a Conservative cabinet position, has already left the party. John Price, the representative for Oswestry East, is anticipated to resign within the next few days. Both individuals are slated to join Shropshire First, a recently established political organization. The two councillors are registered as directors for Shropshire First C.I.C and plan to serve as independent members. Following their resignations, the Conservative group would still constitute the largest contingent on Shropshire Council, though their number would decrease to 37 councillors out of a total of 74. This new political entity has been established in advance of the local elections scheduled for May, with its formal introduction planned for February. In its inaugural YouTube video, Shropshire First states it is “dedicated solely to the needs of our county, free from the constraints of national party agendas”. The organization indicated that its members intend to concentrate on enacting change at both town and county levels, citing dependable waste collection, access to healthcare, and road upkeep as key areas of focus. The group further articulated its mission, stating: “Our goal is simple, to put the people of Shropshire first, rising above the political rhetoric and career ambitions that often overshadow genuine local concerns.”
