The founders of PinkNews have characterized accusations of sexual misconduct within the organization as “false, inconsistent and malicious” in their initial public statement following a BBC investigation into allegations concerning their conduct. Benjamin Cohen and Anthony James published an open letter on the PinkNews website, alleging that the BBC misrepresented their reaction to the inquiry to the public. A BBC documentary featured interviews with 30 individuals, both former and current employees of PinkNews, who claimed that a prevalent culture of heavy drinking resulted in instances of inappropriate conduct by both Mr Cohen and Dr James. Mr Cohen and Dr James stated that their initial inability to comment stemmed from an active criminal investigation. The BBC asserted that its report served “in the public interest”. PinkNews reports that its content, which focuses on the LGBT community, reaches an audience of millions. Five former employees informed the BBC that they witnessed Dr James kissing and touching a younger co-worker, who was characterized as “too drunk to consent”. Additional individuals reported a detrimental work environment and expressed fear of speaking up due to the fact that the company’s two highest-ranking executives were married. Upon being contacted regarding the initial investigation, representatives for Mr Cohen and Dr James informed the BBC that they could not issue a statement at that moment. Nevertheless, the BBC understood the couple’s stance to be that the accusations were untrue, a detail that was incorporated into the report. On the current day, a statement issued by the couple asserted that the reporting had inflicted “extremely serious harm” upon themselves, PinkNews, and their colleagues. The statement declared: “In August, we made a criminal complaint to the police in relation to alleged offences committed against us that are connected with these recent reports.” It continued: “As we told the BBC prior to its initial broadcast, a police investigation was ongoing and we were advised not to make a comment.” The statement further noted: “We are now aware that devices had been seized with forensic investigations continuing.” The statement also included: “Despite the BBC being aware of the police investigation, it chose to broadcast and misled the public about our response. We have consulted lawyers in respect of these false, inconsistent and malicious allegations.” They had clarified: “We had explained to the BBC, that the stage of the police investigation meant that it was not possible for us to comment on the specific allegations even though they were strenuously denied.” Over 10 additional former employees have subsequently contacted the BBC to recount their experiences at PinkNews since the publication of the report last week. A spokeswoman for the BBC stated: “The BBC reported the allegations made by several members of staff at PinkNews. “We approached Mr Cohen and Dr James for comment and we made it clear in our reporting that they said they were unable to provide a comment at this time, but they denied the allegations. “We believe it was in the public interest to report this story.” Subsequent to the BBC’s report, Dr James was suspended from his role as an associate non-executive director within the NHS, awaiting additional information. It has not been indicated that the suspension is connected to his professional conduct within the NHS. The BBC has reached out to Dr James’s representatives for a statement concerning his suspension.
