Organizers of an annual toy appeal in Redditch have stated a critical need for additional donations to ensure every child receives a gift this Christmas. Annually, the Make Christmas Special Toy Appeal, a collaborative effort by the Redditch Mission Area group of churches and the local charity Acts of Kindness, provides presents to local families facing hardship. In the previous year, the appeal successfully distributed gifts and toys to over 600 local children; however, the demand for assistance has escalated further this year. Coordinator Elaine Whitfield noted, “We’ve noticed year-on-year, there’s an increase in need,” adding, “We’ve received over 1,000 referrals this year.” Families in need, identified through local agencies such as schools and social services, are provided with a voucher redeemable for a present for their children. Ms Whitfield, however, indicated that despite the increased demand, there has been a deficit in gift donations. She stated, “We cover from birth to 18,” and further explained, “It’s really difficult to get gifts for [teenagers], but to be honest we are short of everything now.” Ms Whitfield emphasized that each donation contributes significantly. She recounted an instance: “[Last year], there was a little boy who went in [to school] after Christmas, really really excited, and was telling the teacher how Father Christmas had been to him for the first time.” She also shared, “[One woman] had been considering [taking her own life]. And she received the voucher, which meant she could get toys for her children, and that prevented that.” For this year, a retail unit within the Kingfisher Centre has been transformed into a temporary pop-up shop, enabling families to collect their presents. Ms Whitfield explained, “We try and make it as close to the shopping experience for the families as we possibly can,” adding, “I think it’s really important that the parents come in, they preserve their dignity and they can choose the gifts that suit their children.” She concluded with an appeal: “Let’s make this Christmas a Christmas to remember for every child in Redditch.” Donations of toys can be delivered to St Stephen’s Church or to the guest services counter at the Kingfisher Centre.
