Four students from Guernsey have been honored with Apprentice of the Year awards this year, recognizing their contributions in the motor trade. Harry Esteves, Gemma Le Page, Lewis Guest, and Luke Winstanley received these accolades for their engineering apprenticeships, which benefit from the backing of industry sponsors. The College of Further Education annually selects one student from each year group for these awards, basing its decisions on their individual performances. Harry Esteves, who secured the first-year trophy, commented: “It was good to win that – it shows they see you’ve put in the work.” Gemma Le Page, the recipient of the second-year trophy, stated that her favorite aspect of her apprenticeship was “constantly learning and working towards” her job. Lewis Guest, awarded the third-year trophy, expressed that he was “really happy and really proud” upon learning the news. Luke Winstanley, who received the fourth-year trophy, remarked: “It felt rewarding, it’s quite motivating knowing that I’ve been selected for it.” The awards ceremony, organized by the Motor Trades Association, took place at the Route des Coutanchez campus, with attendance from college staff and corporate sponsors. James Wallis, a mechanics teacher, described the awards as “well deserved” by the students. He added: “It’s why I do it… it’s absolutely brilliant.” He further noted: “When you see something you’re trying to show them click, it really makes the job worthwhile.” Follow BBC Guernsey on X and Facebook.
