A submission has been made for the initial phase of a regeneration initiative in central Wolverhampton, which aims to construct over 1,000 new residences. This undertaking encompasses more than 300 new apartments situated on the vacant premises of the former indoor market on Peel Street, alongside the vicinity of Market Square. A maximum of 1,070 new residential units, along with retail outlets, drinking establishments, and eateries, are slated for construction on a 12-acre plot connecting School Street and Darlington Street. The City of Wolverhampton Council has now received a planning application for this development. This endeavor, a collaborative project involving the council, Homes England, Legal & General, and developer Muse, is set to feature an enhanced market square and designated areas for retail, dining, cafes, and al fresco seating. Should the application receive approval, construction might commence in the upcoming year. An accompanying statement within the application indicated that the development is intended to “help to repair the urban fabric of the site and establish a new, bold and proud neighbourhood to the area”. The site of the former market, adjacent to the ring road, has remained unoccupied since the demolition of its building in 2017.
