A motorcyclist stated that prohibiting a weekly biking event, which has occurred for decades, would negatively impact thousands of individuals. Great Bentley Parish Council is currently evaluating the continuation of Bikers Night, an event that draws numerous enthusiasts to the village green during warmer months and ranks among the largest of its type in England. According to council documents, this informal gathering must either be formally managed by an official organization or discontinued. Sam Arnett, who has been visiting the Essex village since childhood, described the current uncertainty as “heart-breaking” for the participating riders. In response to a council consultation, 398 out of 442 surveyed villagers expressed support for the events to continue. As initially reported by the Colchester Gazette, Mr. Arnett indicated that the majority of residents consider it a fundamental tradition of the village. “I’ve made lots of friends down there and created a mental health group to support people,” the 36-year-old stated. “I’ve had people messaging me to say it is the only time their dad went out, or that it was vital for their mental health.” The gathering occurs on Wednesday evenings, drawing attendance ranging from 50 individuals to several thousands. Nevertheless, the council has developed concerns regarding potential liability should an individual sustain an injury on its property. Council documentation indicated that the authority’s subsequent action would be to engage with the biking community after reviewing the consultation outcomes. Mr. Arden, who operates the Colchester Throttle Therapy group, expressed apprehension that local trade would diminish if the event were prohibited. Emphasizing its significance, he further stated: “The culture between motorcyclists is an untouched level of camaraderie, all because you ride a bike.” The council has been contacted for a statement.
