Nucifora Affirms Scotland’s Continued Recruitment of International Talent

David Nucifora, the newly appointed performance director for Scottish Rugby, has declared that while enhancing the development system for homegrown players is a primary objective, the national squad intends to keep utilizing athletes who qualify for Scotland through either ancestral ties or residency requirements. This approach includes individuals such as Australia-born captain Sione Tuipolotu, whose eligibility is derived from his grandmother. The Scottish team has faced criticism from various sources regarding its perceived excessive dependence on players who did not originate from the Scottish development framework. Notable instances include the current captain, Sione Tuipolotu, who was born in Australia but qualifies due to his Scottish grandmother, and Duhan van der Merwe, Scotland’s record try scorer, a South African-born winger who became eligible through residency in 2021. Nucifora commented, “You’ve got to operate within the regulations that you’ve got in front of you.” He added, “You’ve got to be creative. I think that at the end of the day, what do people care about when it really comes to the crunch? They care about winning. They care about having success.” He continued, “So you’ve got to find a way to meet that. And in the perfect world, you will want more players coming out of the system because I think what you have to do is you have to squeeze every drop out of every area that you’ve got access to, to be able to build a winning team.” Nucifora further explained, “So if it’s the pathway and producing local players, we’ve got to make sure we’re doing absolutely everything we can to make them the best that they can be.” He concluded by stating, “If there are other avenues through using exiled players or whatever it may be, we’ve got to be the best at that as well.”
