Train passengers in the East of England region have been advised to anticipate “significantly longer than normal” journey durations over the holidays, owing to extensive engineering projects. A segment of the Midland Main line is scheduled for closure between December 21 and 29, impacting routes to Luton Airport, as £29 million worth of projects are finalized between London St Pancras and Bedford. Further disruptions are expected following Christmas Day due to the construction of two new stations in Cambridge and Essex. Additionally, London’s Liverpool Street Station will be closed for an eight-day period starting December 25. Lawrence Bowman, Network Rail’s route director for the Anglia region, extended gratitude to passengers “for their patience” as the organization carries out “important” enhancements. Commencing Saturday, December 21, East Midlands Railway services will not operate between St Pancras and Bedford, nor will Thameslink services run between St Pancras and Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Travelers are advised to verify their planned routes and anticipate interruptions if their journeys involve stations including Luton Airport Parkway, St Albans, Bedford, Kettering, Nottingham, Derby, and Sheffield. A shuttle train service will be available between Harpenden and Bedford, complemented by rail replacement buses operating between: Neil Thompson, London Luton Airport’s chief operations officer, stated: “Passengers travelling to and from the airport by rail between 21-29 December are advised to plan their route in advance and allow extra time for their journey.” He added: “As ever, our teams will be working hard to deliver a simple and friendly passenger experience for everyone passing through the airport over Christmas.” The £29 million projects encompass upgrades to overhead lines, the construction of a new access bridge for the Radlett Strategic Freight interchange, and enhancements to a road over the rail bridge at Agar Grove in Camden. Philippa Cresswell, East Midlands Railway’s customer service director, commented: “We are working closely with other operators to keep customers moving throughout the festive period; however, journey times will be significantly longer than normal with rail replacement buses and amended timetables in place.” London Liverpool Street Station is scheduled to close from December 25 to January 1 to facilitate engineering work within the Bishopsgate tunnel, involving the installation of steel support girders and the execution of repairs. For eight days, the station concourse and its retail outlets will also be inaccessible during the installation of new ticket gates, aimed at alleviating congestion. Consequently, c2c trains bound for Essex will depart from London Fenchurch Street, traveling via West Ham. Greater Anglia services on the Great Eastern and West Anglia mainlines will operate from Stratford, with the Stansted Express being an exception, running to and from Tottenham Hale. In London, Thameslink services between London Bridge and London St Pancras will be suspended from December 27 to 29. Significant engineering operations are also planned in Cambridgeshire for a duration of up to 12 days, impacting Great Northern and Greater Anglia services. This entails the cessation of train services between Cambridge / Cambridge North and Royston or Elsenham from December 27 to January 5. Services to Bury St Edmunds will similarly be impacted, with rail replacement buses commencing on Friday, December 27. Regular service from Cambridge is projected to resume on Monday, January 6. Network Rail is proceeding with the construction of Cambridge South station and initiating a comprehensive upgrade of the signaling system. Additional works include “the complete remodelling of Shepreth branch junction” and the replacement of switches and crossings at Foxton sidings, necessitating the closure of the Foxton level crossing on the A10. Mr. Bowman stated: “It is important to allow our skilled engineers the time to be able to work safely on the track while trains are not running.” Construction activities at another new station, Beaulieu Park in Chelmsford, Essex, are also set to cause interruptions between Wednesday, December 25, and Saturday, December 28. The signaling system will also undergo an update to reflect the new track configuration between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peverel for its initial display. Great Eastern mainline services passing through Chelmsford will utilize a replacement bus service between Billericay and Witham on December 27 and 28. Looking ahead to the new year, additional engineering works are scheduled for Norfolk and Suffolk. Signal maintenance will occur on the Great Eastern Mainline from Norwich to Ipswich and between Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, with rail replacement buses in service during the first three weekends of January. Mark Budden of Network Rail commented: “While these essential upgrades may cause temporary disruption, it will result in faster, smoother, and more reliable journeys for passengers in the future.” He further added: “Christmas is the ideal time to carry out this work with minimal impact, as fewer people are travelling. “Whilst that is beneficial from an engineering perspective, we do recognise that passengers are still needing to travel for work and to visit friends and relatives. “We would like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding during this vital work.” Post navigation Nottingham Tram Service to See Maintenance-Related Disruption Herefordshire Bus Services to Be Enhanced by £3.257m Investment
