Chrissy McKaigue, a two-time Ulster Championship winner, has concluded his career with Derry. The seasoned defender, who made his inter-county debut in 2008, was awarded an All-Star in 2022 after leading the Oak Leaf county as captain to the Ulster title that year. He also played a crucial role in their subsequent provincial victory in 2023. The 35-year-old Slaughtneil club-man McKaigue, a 2022 All-Star, also contributed to Derry’s National League Division One title win earlier this year under Mickey Harte. However, he has chosen not to continue playing into the upcoming Paddy Tally era. A statement released by Derry GAA acknowledged his contributions, stating: “As a former Derry senior captain and an All-Star recipient in 2022, Chrissy leaves a legacy etched in determination, leadership, and excellence.” The statement further noted, “Throughout his career – 149 senior appearances – Chrissy was more than just a player. His leadership both on and off the pitch guided Derry through some of its most defining moments in recent years, re-establishing the county as a force to be reckoned with in Gaelic football.” The statement continued, highlighting: “Chrissy’s passion for Derry GAA was evident in every match, every tackle, and every rallying cry to his team. His All-Star recognition in 2022 was a fitting testament to his skill, work ethic, and commitment, but his contributions went far beyond individual accolades.” Derry GAA’s statement also conveyed that while McKaigue’s tenure as an Oak Leaf player has ended, “there is no doubt” his influence on gaelic games within Derry remains “far from over.” It added, “His leadership, vision, and dedication ensure he will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the sport in the county, inspiring generations to come.” The statement concluded with gratitude: “Thank you, Chrissy, for your remarkable service to Derry football. You retire as a Derry great, and your influence will continue to shine brightly in the years ahead.” Post navigation Glasgow Secures Narrow URC Victory Over Scarlets Bruno Fernandes Addresses Garnacho’s Perceived Loss of Fan Faith
