Bicycles may soon be permitted on Greater Manchester’s Metrolink tram network, marking the first time in its 32-year operational history. Transport authorities are evaluating the possibility of allowing bikes on carriages during off-peak hours, following a trial conducted earlier this year. However, the necessary tram adaptations are projected to require at least another 12 months. The estimated cost for modifying both tram carriages and stations to accommodate bicycles ranges between £5 million and £8 million. Councillors are scheduled to consider approving this scheme. The earliest projection for these fully modified trams to commence operation on routes is late 2025. The Metrolink system has prohibited the transport of bikes since its launch in 1992. Nevertheless, subsequent to a trial, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) announced that two dedicated bicycle spaces will now be installed on each tram. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, this policy change would necessitate the adaptation of all 147 tram vehicles operating on the network, including modifications to their seating layouts. An assessment will also be conducted on the 99 Metrolink stations to determine their suitability for handling bikes. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) indicated that several stops, such as Market Street in Manchester city centre, are unlikely to be suitable due to probable space constraints. Currently, Metrolink permits folded bicycles and offers cycle parking facilities at the majority of its tram stops. Additionally, specific sizes of mobility scooters are allowed under a permit scheme. TfGM has issued a notice regarding this matter. It stated: “Allowing bikes on Metrolink would align with our transport strategy which aims to build a world-class walking, wheeling and cycling network.” “By allowing the carriage of bikes during off-peak times the catchment area of Metrolink could be widened as people may choose to cycle a little further.” “This could boost patronage by tapping a new market during off-peak times when the services have capacity.” The report further specified that bikes would be permitted exclusively during quieter periods and would remain prohibited during football matches and other special events. Clarification 9 December: This article has been revised to indicate that TfGM has not yet finalized a decision on the policy.
