An initiative focused on charitable donations of essential household items to 75,000 families has commenced operations. The inaugural Multibank in North-east England is managed by The Junction charity, operating from a facility in Middlesbrough. This program involves gathering clothing, crockery, and toiletries from various businesses for subsequent distribution to residents in the local area. Gordon Brown, the former Prime Minister and co-founder of Multibanks with Amazon, stated that the practice of repurposing surplus items would offer “a huge boost for low income families” and also benefit the environment. He expressed optimism that this new facility would contribute to “put a smile on every child’s face” leading up to Christmas. Brown further commented, “We are tackling pollution and alleviating its effects by creating a new, cost effective, solution that sustains both the planet and childhood opportunity.” He added, “Multibanks are not just about meeting needs but offering hope that families struggling can have a better life.” This Tees Valley Multibank represents the fifth such establishment, joining existing initiatives in Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, and London. Its operational model mirrors that of a foodbank. Corporations such as Amazon, Heinz, Morrison’s, and Tesco contribute items including toys, towels, and cleaning supplies. Subsequently, educators, social workers, and community organizations facilitate the distribution of these goods to families within the local community. Data from the End Childhood Poverty Coalition indicates that a minimum of one in four children in the North East resides in poverty. Middlesbrough records the highest incidence of child poverty within the region. Beth Major, CEO of The Junction, commented that the multibank would facilitate assistance reaching those most in need. She stated, “No-one should struggle alone.” Major added, “The Junction Multibank will help agencies and practitioners provide essential goods to families and individuals facing challenges, ensuring quicker access to basic needs.” John Boumphrey, Amazon’s UK country manager, expressed that he was “incredibly proud” of the collective “commitment to grow the Multibanks.” He reported that five million products have been distributed to over 500,000 families since the program’s inception in 2022. Boumphrey affirmed, “Our goal is to help as many families as possible across the Tees Valley.” For updates, follow BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
