BBC Sport commentator Alistair Bruce-Ball has shared his reflections on his commentary experiences at Goodison Park, ahead of what might be his last match at the venue this Sunday. He specifically recalled the dramatic late winner scored by Dominic Calvert-Lewin in 2022, which secured Premier League survival, as a moment marked by intense drama and a degree of confusion. Speaking on The Commentators’ View podcast, Bruce-Ball stated, “I don’t know what the rest of my schedule is but Chelsea against Everton could be the last commentary personally I do at Goodison Park.” He added, “One of the most dramatic moments I have have ever witnessed commentating happened there.” He elaborated on the match, noting that under Frank Lampard, the team achieved a 3-2 victory against Crystal Palace after being 2-0 down, ensuring their survival. He described the atmosphere, saying, “Noise like that – it was amazing.” Bruce-Ball also discussed the well-known challenge of the commentary position at Goodison Park, which features an old pillar obstructing the view. He explained that Everton was playing towards the goal situated to the left of his commentary spot. Regarding the third goal, he was “pretty sure Calvert-Lewin had scored it” but noted that the packed penalty area meant the player was “hidden behind the stanchion.” To identify the scorer, Bruce-Ball recounted his attempt to employ a “classic old commentators’ trick of seeing who the players run to in the celebration.” However, he noted that “because it was such an important goal for Everton they basically all ran off as if they had scored it in different directions.” He concluded, “I thought ‘I’m not entirely sure who scored that’ but I got lucky and guessed it was Calvert-Lewin!”
