North Lincolnshire Council has disbursed a total of £42,874 in compensation to motorists over the last four years due to vehicle damage attributed to potholes. During the 2023/2024 financial year, North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) issued 57 payments to drivers for vehicle damage resulting from potholes on roadways under its jurisdiction. From the 2020/2021 period onwards, NLC received 410 claims concerning potholes, with 135 of these claims ultimately resulting in compensation payments. NLC stated its annual investment of £13 million towards the maintenance and enhancement of the region’s road network. As reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, NLC holds responsibility for maintaining the majority of roads within its geographical area, excluding motorways, certain A-roads, and private thoroughfares. A spokesperson for the council commented: “1.14 billion vehicle miles were travelled on roads in North Lincolnshire in 2023 alone, which inevitably takes its toll on road surfaces. “To combat this wear and tear and make journeys safer and smoother for everyone, we invest more than £13m every year to maintain and improve the road network.”As well as tackling potholes this also includes major re-surfacing programmes, that many residents are already seeing the benefits of.”
