A hotel employee has received commendation for assisting a guest facing a perilous situation. Jodie Offen safely guided a woman away and contacted law enforcement following a man’s violent behavior at the Hull location on 11 June 2023. Ms. Offen’s bravery was recognized at the national Police Public Bravery Awards, held at The Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield on 14 November. These awards acknowledge civilians who have safeguarded individuals and prevented criminal acts. Ms. Offen was on duty during a night shift at the reception desk when the arrival of two guests, a man and a woman, raised her apprehension. She visited their room multiple times to ascertain the woman’s well-being, and on one occasion, she perceived the woman to be in distress. Upon knocking on the door and receiving confirmation from the woman that she was “not OK,” Ms. Offen positioned herself between the woman and the man, who subsequently turned violent. She then accompanied the woman to the staff room and alerted the police. Subsequently, the man received a restraining order as part of his sentencing. Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall said: “Jodie should be incredibly proud of what she did that day. With no thought for her own safety, she put herself in harm’s way whilst helping safeguard a vulnerable member of our community. The outstanding courage and compassion Jodie displayed needed to be recognised.”
