A new budget hotel is set to launch its inaugural location on the Isle of Man, as part of a development partially financed by the government, aiming to revitalize brownfield areas. Travelodge has disclosed its intention to sign a 30-year lease agreement with the developers, Tevir Properties. This agreement pertains to a mixed-use property situated on Villiers Square in Douglas, which will feature an 80-bed hotel, a restaurant, and a bar cafe. The blueprints for this multi-million pound complex, which additionally incorporates retail and office facilities, received approval in April. Construction is slated to commence early next year. The government’s Infrastructure Scheme is providing a subsidy for this project, covering 25% of the construction expenses. Tony O’Brien, Travelodge’s UK Development Director, stated that the hotel chain had sought a “suitable opportunity” to establish a branch on the Isle of Man for “many years,” identifying Villiers Square as the “perfect site.” The chain will finalize a 30-year lease, with the hotel’s handover anticipated in 2026. The company indicated that the inauguration of the Travelodge branch is expected to generate 27 employment opportunities. The office and retail components of the complex are planned for construction along the promenade, while the six-storey hotel will be positioned behind them. The location, which also shares a border with Ridgeway Street, has not undergone substantial development in three decades. Ciaran Doherty, Managing Director of Tevir Group, commented that this collaboration aligns with a “vision” for Villiers Square to become a “dynamic mixed-use space in the heart of Douglas.”
