A charity megastore, believed to be one of the largest in the nation, has commenced operations at a well-known retail destination in Telford. This 19,000 sq ft (1,765 sq m) space, previously occupied by Wilko within the Telford Centre, had remained vacant since October 2023. The premises now house a British Heart Foundation outlet specializing in home goods and fashion. Vinny Ferrer, the new branch manager, stated, “This store in itself, it’s special… it’s the location, it’s a place where you can buy new goods as well as pre-loved goods.” He informed the BBC, “It’s one of the home and fashion ones [stores], with the largest fashion department in the country, which makes it even more attractive for those who are looking for what I always call the thrill of a find.” He added, “Customers are travelling far distances just to shop with us, because the amount of collections, the amount of goods we do sell, is increasing constantly.” “The nearest stores we had were either 15 miles north or 15 miles south,” he mentioned. Mr. Ferrer further noted several factors contributing to the increased popularity of charity shops. He elaborated, “From the cost of living crisis to the increase in bills and energy and everything, but also in understanding and realising that we don’t call things secondhand, we call it upcycling.” “Something is always new to somebody else,” he concluded. Glynn Morrow, who manages the Telford Centre, commented that the facility had experienced “significant voids” over the past few years. In addition to the Wilko space becoming vacant, the Debenhams store within the centre also closed its doors in 2021, subsequently being replaced by a Flip Out trampoline park. He remarked, “The charity shop image has moved on over the years.” “The store looks absolutely fantastic, it looks like a genuine furniture store out there,” he added. He further stated, “It’s a great location, really good footfall between us and the park.” For updates, follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC.
