A company planning to establish a new production facility on the Isle of Man has stated that cultivating medicinal cannabis there offers a chance to “tap into a global sector.” GrowLab Organics (Glo) recently received approval from planners to build a dedicated complex for the cultivation and export of the drug. This license, granted in 2022, permits the firm to cultivate, extract, manufacture, import, and export the drug, following legislative amendments made the year prior. Alex Fray, the chief executive, noted a worldwide “transition around the world from illegal to legal for medical,” which he believes presents “economic opportunities the island is well suited to.” He further stated that the island possesses a “history of being innovative in creating economic niches” in sectors such as financial services, e-gaming, and its shipping register. “I felt there was an opportunity for the Isle of Man play a role in this global sector that’s opening up in front of us,” he commented. The UK medical cannabis market, identified as the second largest in Europe, is projected to reach a value of £300m by 2025, according to Prohibition Partners, a market research firm that promotes the industry. A majority of these products currently lack a license, indicating they have not completed specific clinical trials or been assessed as cost-effective by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the body tasked with drug evaluation. Mr. Fray emphasized “a huge argument for transparency” due to the existence of a “huge legacy market” where numerous consumers continue to purchase illegally produced goods. He expressed his belief that medicinal cannabis has the potential to “have a positive impact on the quality of life for people suffering from a wide range of conditions.” The company intends to complete the facility’s construction within 12 months, with exports of goods commencing by 2026.
