Firefighters have successfully put out a fire involving 15 tonnes of scrap metal. Emergency teams from Weymouth and Poole were dispatched just after 16:00 GMT on Friday following reports of a conflagration at the Abbey metals site, located on St Georges Rd in Dorchester. Dorchester fire station communicated via a social media post that “crews were faced with a well developed fire”. The station further noted that firefighters “worked hard to contain and extinguish the fire”, utilizing four appliances and receiving support from onsite personnel and their machinery. No individuals sustained injuries during the incident. Firefighters indicated that the fire occurred “in a bunded area,” which signifies the presence of a constructed retaining wall around the metal. A bunding wall is frequently erected to contain potentially polluting substances. The service reported that the site underwent a re-inspection at 09:00. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though it is not believed to have been deliberate.
